Could Going Green Be Good For Your Love Life? It Worked for These Celebs…

Hollywood actors are often known for their dysfunctional relationships as much as their movie roles. But lately we’ve been seeing some couples really standing the test of time. Interestingly enough, these celebs are all renowned for their commitment to living an eco-friendly life. Is it a coincidence? Probably. But it’s nice to think that being eco-conscious is as good for your love life as it is for the planet. Here are some of our favorite green couples that have really been going the distance (and probably been enjoying romantic dinners in the light of an eco-friendly candle along the way):

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard

It’s no secret that we adore this hilarious pair. Last year, we dubbed them the world’s most adorable eco-friendly couple, and they have continued to live up to the title. They do lots of things that are great for the planet and for humanity in general. Bell is a devoted animal lover and has gone vegan as a result (Shepard followed suit for a while, but couldn’t resist the allure of an occasional chicken breast). They’re also very outspoken about their adoration for each other. Shepard is the one who took the infamous sloth meltdown video, and their sweet and funny love story has played out over the years on The Ellen Show.

Though they dated for seven years (practically a century in Hollywood terms) they refused to get married until DOMA was struck down and same-sex marriage was federally recognized. Even then, they skipped the big fancy wedding and all the resources gobbled up by an event like that and instead got hitched at the City Hall. They also became huge advocates for allowing celeb children to maintain their privacy after the birth of their daughter Lincoln (and we presume they’ll be even more outspoken on that front as rumor has it they’re expecting baby number 2).

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson

These longtime loves have been together since 2006, and despite successful careers, they have been relatively under the radar. Jackson was a child actor who turned into the ideal TV boyfriend for a generation of teenagers with his role on the long-running Dawson’s Creek. He also just wrapped up a five-year stint on the cult sci-fi hit Fringe. Kruger has graced the big screen in splashy films like Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and is beginning her second year as the star of FX’s The Bridge, an adaptation of a hit Danish program.

Despite their impressive pedigrees, the actors largely manage to stay out of the tabloids. Their secret? Kruger credits their green lifestyle. They have hybrid cars and a biodiesel truck, but often eschew them entirely in favor of bicycling everywhere. And, as Kruger points out, hiking and cycling isn’t exactly thrilling to the paparazzi. Their green ethos has certainly brought them closer together – and the lack of scrutiny probably helps, too.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

While Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson happily avoid the public eye, superstars Beyoncé and Jay-Z (who have been together twelve years and married for six of them ) seem to live their lives in the spotlight. Everything from their music, to their fashion choices, to their flashy tropical vacations, to their baby name selection, to their family feuds is covered not just in tabloids but splashed all over mainstream news. What you hear less about is their eco-conscious ethos. Jay-Z has been a longtime investor in his cousin’s Brooklyn chicken wing company Buffalo Boss, which serves 100-percent organic chicken with no trans-fat or hormones. Late last year the couple tackled (and completed!) a 22-day vegan challenge.

We’re not saying there’s definitive proof that green living can make your love life golden. But if you check out the longtime lovebirds above, you’ll see that even though they all live very different lifestyles, a green thread binds them together. Food for thought?
